CCUD Liu Yue calls on UNESCO's chief representative in China

On the morning of October 23, 2018, Liu Yue, Director of the International Cooperation Department of the China Center for Urban Development (CCUD) under the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), visited the UNESCO Beijing Office and called on Ms. Marielza Oliveira, Chief Representative in China, and Ms. Himalchuli Gurung, Programme Specialist for Culture. The two sides conducted in-depth exchanges on how to promote sustainable urban development and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for the UN 2030 Agenda in the fields of culture and heritage. Ms. Marielza Oliveira said that she will actively cooperate with the CCUD in the future. Lu Ye, a UNESCO program official, and Zhu Peiqi, a program official of the CCUD International Cooperation Department, attended the meeting.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established in 1945, with the mission to create the conditions for genuine dialogue among civilizations based on respect for shared values and the dignity of each culture. UNESCO is headquartered in Paris, France and has offices, research institutions and centers around the world. The United Nations Office in China was established in 1984. This office is responsible for a region which has about one fifth of the world's population, about 25 percent of the world's economic output, and a long history and rich culture of more than 5,000 years.

Through collaboration with other UNESCO departments and with the United Nations system, the UNESCO Beijing Office is committed to finding and implementing creative solutions for sustainable development at the social, cultural, environmental and economic levels, in an effort to help countries achieve their priority development goals and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Education 2030 Agenda. These goals are to be achieved through programs in five main areas of education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and communication and information. To date, the UNESCO Beijing Office has cooperatively established 22 Category 2 centers, 60 biospheres and 95 World Heritage sites in the above five areas carried out capacity building for important decision-making institutions; helped strengthen policies, standards and practices in UNESCO's work areas; promoted collaboration within these areas and with other countries; and had a profound impact on people's lives.
